Blue Cypress Lake is one of the most beautiful places in Florida! It is the first in a chain of lakes that form the upper St. Johns River system. We paddle the west side of the lake which features a cypress forest that extends into the water, so that we actually paddle through the trees. The lake is a major nesting area for osprey. Some years have seen more than 300 nests! It also attracts a nice variety of wading birds including great blue heron and limpkin, along with an alligator or two.
Located about 20 miles west of Vero Beach, this destination is “off the beaten path”. The drive to the lake is scenic as well. I see many hawks and often see deer or turkey on Blue Cypress Lake Road.
